7p to 9:30p
Join us at the shop for an in-person training that combines Court Watch NYC's Intro to CWNYC and #BailWatch trainings. Note: if this time does not work for you, you can join our two part virtual training on April 21 and 28th!
We will cover a brief history of mass incarceration & abolition, the NYC court system, why court watching is important, and how to watch arraignments! When you leave at the end of the night, you will be fully prepared to join our Bail Watch campaign as an active court watcher.
When court watchers attend arraignments, we wear CWNYC bright yellow T-shirts to make our presence known. When you RSVP, you can select the size of T-shirt you would like and pick it up at the event.
Pizza will be available at the start of the event, and drinks for purchase.
Accessibility: there are two small steps to enter the shop. Seating is available, with some standing room if the event is very full.
Masking is strongly encouraged and masks will be provided at the door if you don't have one!
ABOUT COURT WATCH NYC
Court Watch NYC is a volunteer-run anti-carceral project focused on reducing the harm of the carceral state by training New Yorkers to observe and collect data on criminal court arraignments.
OUR MISSION
Court Watch NYC brings New Yorkers into publicly accessible criminal courtrooms across the five boroughs as compassionate witnesses to the harm of the carceral state. As an all-volunteer organization, we aim to serve communities impacted by the courts via monitoring arraignments, collecting data, and providing court support. We strive to shine a light on injustices in the judicial system and the harmful impact it has on communities, and specifically on people of color.
Our ultimate goal for court watching is prison and policing abolition. We strive to demystify the judicial process and to help hold DAs and judges accountable. Beyond our presence in court, we work to train and mobilize court watchers, build community, and uplift the voices of the communities most impacted by the courts in New York City.
We can't wait to see you! Email information@archestrat.us with any questions about event logistics, or info@courtwatchnyc.org for questions about anything related to court watching.
