Hummus is great but the real pleasure in growing chickpeas is to be able to enjoy them fresh. In Lebanon they are a roadside snack beloved by kids--pop them right into your mouth out of the pod which has a slightly salty and sour taste. In Mexico fresh chickpea season is eagerly awaited and they roast the green pods right over a fire.
Plant in full sun in Spring when you’d plant peas. We’ve also had success growing a late Summer and Fall crop.
