Paperback--Spiral bound
The first volume of Michael Patrick O’Brien’s How the Sausage Gets Made appears under the guise of a blue Five Star lined notebook. Photographs left over from an introductory photography class are juxtaposed with notes from a physics class. There are messy strikethroughs among the notebook’s derivatives and equations, showing the mistakes that occur while learning. Preliminary, strangely exposed versions of a photo appear in sequence, before a more legible photo appears. The content of the photographs appear unremarkable—people smiling at a family dinner, a cat in a garden, and a tree in a meadow. As the idiom in the title implies, process is emphasized over product when learning.
